OHIO HUNTING:   is a unique blending of land types, offering hunters a variety of hunting scenes. From the rolling, forested hills to flat, intensively-farmed tracts to marshes and bays along the Lake Erie coast, the countryside changes as does the game. There are more than 70,000 acres designated as public hunting areas. While small game such as rabbits and squirrels are bountiful, the white-tailed deer is probably the most popular game species. Ohio is well known for the size of its deer, both body size and antlers.   Ohio is consistently in the top 10 states for entries to both Boone and Crockett, and Pope and Young. The deer gun season length varies with three separately regulated deer hunting zones currently, plus five urban deer zones in which a hunter can use up to four urban deer permits. Archery hunters fare extremely well in Ohio with a four-month season for both long bows and cross bows.  Small game hunters have excellent opportunities for rabbits, and both gray and fox squirrels. Dove hunting is very good and quickly growing in popularity, and Ohio is among the top states for Canada goose hunting in the Great Lakes region. The eastern wild turkey is abundant and new records for number of turkeys taken are set nearly every year. Ohio also offers some of the best raccoon hunting in the country.  There are special controlled hunts for waterfowl, rabbits, pheasants and other legal game each year to provide extra opportunities for young hunters. Young hunters apply in advance and must be accompanied by a licensed, non-hunting adult. Young hunters are also given priority on opening day afternoon hunts at several wildlife areas where blind drawings are conducted for waterfowl hunters.
