HUNTING NORTH CAROLINA:
North Carolina has over 1.8
million acres of public hunting lands. Most of these lands are
available to hunt by sportsmen with Game Lands Use Licenses during
the regular open seasons. Special hunt opportunities based on
quotas are available on areas with a history of heavy use or where
hunting pressure must be carefully controlled for game management
reasons. These include opportunities for turkey, deer, waterfowl,
small game and trapping. Applications can be submitted by mail or
electronically through any one of almost a thousand Wildlife
Service Agents in the state. More...
Deer is, by far,
the most popular game animal in the state, followed by dove,
squirrel, rabbit and waterfowl.
North Carolina
leads the Southeast with numbers of black bear. Bear seasons are
established for both the mountains and the coast with the coastal
population numbering almost twice that of the mountains.
One of the most
unique hunting opportunities in North Carolina is the permitted
Tundra Swan hunts. Five thousand permits are issued annually for
this bird. North Carolina winters the largest concentration of
swan on the east coast with the majority wintering in the
Northeast corner of the state.
BEAR -- There are four different bear seasons in the state with the
earliest beginning the Monday on or nearest October 15 and the
latest starting the second Monday in December. See the printed
digest or the web site for details.
DEER -- Deer seasons vary within four zones in the state but the
earliest starts with bow season beginning the Monday on or nearest
September 10 and the latest season ends at the conclusion of gun
season on 1 January. In over 60% of the counties, deer of either
sex may be taken anytime during the deer season.
