NEBRASKA HUNTING: Nebraska’s
game species are as diverse as its terrain. Mule deer, elk,
bighorn sheep and wild turkey roam the pine-covered hills in the
state’s northwest corner, ducks and geese flock to the Platte
River, its tributaries and the Rainwater Basin, and pheasants,
quail, squirrels and white-tailed deer call southeast Nebraska
home.
M ost species can be found in every corner of the state, and with
hunting seasons running from the Aug. 1 squirrel opener to the
close of spring turkey season in May, the opportunity for
mixed-bag hunts abound. More than 800,000 acres of state and federal land are open to
public hunting, and the opportunity to hunt private land is
there if hunters are willing to knock on a few doors. CRP-MAP, a
program that pays landowners to improve lands enrolled in the
federal Conservation Reserve Program for wildlife and open them
to walk-in hunting, gives hunters access to an additional
170,000 acres of land.
Many of the half-million or so ring-necked pheasants harvested
in the state during a typical three-month season will come from
these walk-in areas. The state ranks in the top four in the
nation each year in the harvest of pheasants.
Prairie grouse thrive in the Sandhills - a vast expanse of
grass-covered dunes that includes plenty of public land.
Beginning Sept. 15 and ending Dec. 31, archery deer hunters in
the state enjoy one of the longest seasons in the nation.
Unlimited permits are valid statewide, with the same true for
the December muzzleloader season. Limited permits are available
for a November firearm deer season. Permits in ten Season Choice
Areas give hunters the choice of when to hunt and with what
equipment. These antlerless-only permits are valid during the
archery, muzzleloader or firearm seasons (the November season
and a special season in January) and can be used in any or all
of the seasons until the permit is filled. Application periods
for deer permits begin in April. The very limited elk and
bighorn seasons are open to residents only, with applications
also taken in the spring.
Spring and fall archery turkey permits also are unlimited.
Shotgun permits are unlimited in the Northwest Unit. A limited
number of shotgun permits are issued for three management units
covering the rest of the state for both the spring and fall
season.
Hunters can apply for or purchase all deer, antelope and turkey
permits directly from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s
web site.
Duck and goose season dates vary across the state, but typically
begin in late-September or early-October and end in January,
giving hunters plenty of chances to set out decoys on or near
one of many rivers, reservoirs or wetlands the birds frequent. A
late-winter light goose conservation action, designed to help
reduce the overpopulated mid-continental population of snow
geese, is held in the spring.
